Weekend Trip

Ciao,

So this weekend, our school headed down south to the area of Naples where we visited Capri Island, Pompeii, and Naples as well. Friday morning, we left at 8:30 am from the school and drove down to Pompeii. After the four hour or so bus trip, we stopped and had lunch at a pizzeria which was pretty good and not crazy expensive. After eating, we took a tour of Pompeii and its ruins. This is the infamous ancient city that was destroyed thousands of years ago by a volcanic eruption from Mount Vesuvius. I believe the volcano is still active today. Anyways, the gas from the explosion is actually what killed the majority of them, and they were buried in ashes from the volcano. It's interesting, but sad as well.

After the three hour walking tour, we headed back to our hotel which was pretty far away. It was a nice hotel, but seemed way too far from everything that we went to on the trip. We ate at another pizzeria (can't get enough of that pizza!) and had some fabulous bruschette pomodoro as well. After a good dinner, I went back to the hotel to sleep, since we were getting up before 8 am the next day!

On Saturday, we woke up super early to drive over to the port where we would take the ferry to the island Capri. The ride was well worth it, however. As we approached the island, I think all of our jaws dropped in wonder and awe. It was beautiful and very serene. We climbed to the center of the city where we walked around a bit, had lunch, and found a place to relax and sun tan on the beach, called Marina Piccola. It was a nice break from the hectic tour and traveling yesterday, and we left too soon for most of our tastes!

When we arrived back to the hotel, it was late (we got lost on our way back somehow) and had dinner at a pub. Melissa got some sort of pasta with eggplant in it and I got a chicken sandwich with french fries in it! I picked most of them out however haha. After eating our meals, we again headed back to the hotel for some needed sleep.

The next day, we had a hotel breakfast again (I had some cornettos (croissants) filled with custard, some granola mix, and another pastry) and we were off to Mount Vesuvius. My feet have been hurting like a mother, so I opted out of the climb and instead hung out with some other people who weren't feeling well. Afterwards, we ended up finally in Naples where Melissa and I walked around a little bit (I more so hobbled), got lunch, and met up with the school group for the tour of the Archaelogical Museum. After seeing works of art thousands of years old, we got back on the bus and ended back at home. Overall, it was a very exhausting but entertaining weekend!

 At Pompeii
 Ruins of a temple
When the archaeologists were digging, one man had the idea to pour in plaster into shallow spots they found in homes, and found the outlines of the people's bodies that were trapped by the volcano.

 A stove that's about 2000 years old.

In the Villa of Mysteries, a fresco wall that might have displayed a secret cult that the owner was involved in.

The amphitheater where they held sporting events.
